Trey and I had talked a little about getting the kids a bunk bed and turning one of the bedrooms into a playroom. We knew that Josiah would love bunk beds, but were a little unsure how well he and Elaina would sleep if sharing a room. They both sleep so well and we didn't want to mess that up. Josiah was excited to get the top bunk; Elaina not so much about getting bottom. I had to tell her we could make it a tent for her to go for it.
I saw a used one that was a great price and we decided to go ahead and get it. It had been painted (poorly spray painted) black and will need to be sanded and repainted. We got the bed all set up and realized that we needed box springs for the bed. The kids had mattresses on the other beds but no box springs. So Trey called around and then raced to get 2 before the store closed.
He got the box springs and we got it all set up and the kids love it. We did have to modify it a little to make Elaina's not as high. She didn't have much space between hers and the top bunk so we took the cross slats off and put the box spring on the floor then her mattress on top. Now she has a lot more space between the beds.
As we were talking down Elaina's bed I lost it. It was one of those mom meltdown moments were you realize that they are getting so big. Something about taking down her princess bed (even though she only had it a year and a half) hit the emotional button hard. She isn't but a few days older than she was sleeping in her princess bed, but she seems so much bigger. She had a cool princess bed and now she has a bunk bed; nothing little girlish about that.
When we were talking down Josiah's bed Trey joked about going ahead and moving Emmett over to it. I told him that would have completely turned me into a mommy puddle of emotions. I said if we do that then Josiah needs to get a loose tooth and just do all our next steps at once.
Trey called me in as he was taking down Josiah's bed and told me to grab my camera. He had a little helper just like he did here (click for link) when he was setting it up for the first time.
Even though it was hard emotionally, I know we made the right choice. They are loving the new beds and now we have a playroom again. Now we just have to get everything set up in there and they will love having it too. And hopefully they will be able to keep everything picked up a little better.
